The Bautzener Straße site is adjacent to the 17 hectare Gleisdreieck Park, a former railway compound transformed into a green hub in the heart of Berlin. Being separated from the park by active train tracks, the North-South oriented site is the eastern end of its residential neighborhood. The overseeing planning strategy is to create a green portal that completes Berlin's North-South connection, and to provide local residents and bikers a car free green path.
Following the natural terrain change, a green podium is created to lift the residential program to the elevated park level. Public programs such as a supermarket and bakeries are placed on the street level. The residential buildings work as pairs of twos to form gardens which resonates Berlin's courtyard typology. Yet these new open courtyards introduce more sunlight and better air flow. Community open spaces are placed between the groups of buildings to invite outdoor activities.
