The best way to preserve a deserted historical monument is not to leave it untouched but rather to reintegrate it into its local community by adjusting its existing structure for today's needs. Schloss Raben Steinfeld is a case like this. The ambition in this project is not only to look for an architectural retouch but also to work with the Ministry of Forestry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the city to look for appropriate programs that will help to reintroduce the Schloss to its neighborhood.
As a result, we introduced public and civil programs, including forestry office spaces and gathering spaces for the village, rather than a privatized hotel which prevails in its surrounding. While the historic castle serves as the representative entrance building which welcomes visitors and contains reception offices, the former dormitory building in the back homes the office functions. A new transparent wood box is introduced floating above the forest which oversees the castle and Schwerin Lake. It contains programs like a library and an event hall which gives the public an opportunity to experience the unique environment that the site has to offer.
